Nurturing Her Passion

Sarah has asked to ride horses since she was four.  She has always picked out horse books at the library or bookstore.

We promised her when she was nine she could start lessons - nine came and we worried that we wouldn't be able to afford them.

Ten came and the desire hadn't waned.  We probably still can't afford them really, but we are going on Sarah's passion and our faith that God will provide.

  2. Our first daughter loved horses when she was four. A state park used to let you ride a horse for a dollar. She only rode a couple of times and then that program was stopped; but she would tell people that she had her own horse. She never asked again after that, those times were fine for her. Same with ballet lessons. So if you can get her a lesson or two, that might satisfy her.

  4. I love this. My daughters both feel the same way, so we gave them each 2 lessons this summer. It was just enough to satisfy them, but they are already asking for more. I'm going to try putting them off, they are a little younger (near 8). I love that you are following her desire, I'm sure it will all work out.

  6. Oh Tonya...this is all the talk around our place right now, too, with my six year old. Yes, they seem rather expensive, and I keep reminding my husband that the poop feeds the gardens :) Next spring, Sunshine will start lessons and we are both excited. Happy horsing around with your girl! xo Jules

  7. God is good, and always provides a way for the things that are meant to be. I was a horse crazy girl who talked my parents into letting me buy a horse with my life's savings (a few hundred dollars) just before I turned 13. It's been 30 years since then, and while I haven't always owned a horse that entire time, I have always been around them in one way or another. In a few more years your daughter will be old enough and strong enough that she might be able to do barn chores in exchange for horse lessons (or even board) like I did.

  8. My sister's stepdaughter was given a horse by her mother when she was 13. To her credit, my sister took her stepdaughter out to the stable every day even though it wasn't at all her idea. That horse saw her stepdaughter through some very difficult times. Her stepdaughter has since won many trophies for her riding, and has made horses her life. She's now married to someone who shares her passion. So you just never know...
