Canning Not Crafting

I keep reminding myself that I will have allllll winter to craft in my free moments (smiling)....

My days now are filled with making food with our harvest for our meals and canning some to eat this winter.

Just today as I was picking beans AGAIN, I found myself grumbling again and was immediately filled with remorse. How grateful I should be for the bounty! God has provided us with healthy, delicious food and I need to go into the gardens eagerly to provide food for my family this winter. If anyone has some string bean recipes to share, canned or fresh, please do.

When searching for a canned pickled beet recipe, I came across this great blog - A Bushel
Of What.

Another three pints of beets done today - six pints all together.
Enjoy!
Warm wishes,
Tonya

  1. For fresh beans, I just steam them up, add a sprinkling of dill and a bit of feta if I have it. Toss with a simple dressing of a couple TBL red wine vinegar, 1 TBL minced shallots (if you have them) 1 clove minced garlic, 3 TBL olive oil, a bit of sliced red onion and some salt and pepper to taste. There are never any leftovers.

  3. I have a Pickled Basil bean recipe that is WONDERFUL! I'm planning on posting a Pickled Carrot stick recipe that was handed down from my Grandma, it's VERY yummy too! Keep an eye out on our blog, I'm trying to find the time and energy to get it posted.

BTW, did you receive my snail mail letter and recipes from Cortney and I? We're planning on putting our craft in the mail, later this week*wink* Happy canning and when I get overwhelmed it helps we to go down to the pantry and just look at all the homegrown, homecanned goodies and give the Lord the Praise in prayer. You know what I ALWAYS feel re-energized afterward.

  4. I understand..we are now getting greenbeans by the baskets full but all I can think about is crocheting or doing some needlework. The days are finely getting a little cooler and that always gives me the craft bug:)

It won't be long and there will be snow on the ground....you will then enjoy all your produce.

    Many Blessings,

    Lynn

  6. Amen! I think there's definitely a seasonality to crafting just like there is to cuisine. I've had to put a lot of those fall/winter crafts on hold to get canning and gardening done and I keep having to remind myself that there is a season to everything and everything can and should be enjoyed in its season.

    Thanks!
