Last spring I planted one little strawberry plant I bought at the Farmer's Market for $2.00. By the end of the summer, there were several runners coming from that one plant, so I cut the stems and let the new plants grow on their own. This year we have a few strawberry plants but probably only about 12 strawberries in total.
With seven out of eight of us loving strawberries and not having had even a one since last summer, the competition is fierce to be the first to spot the next ripe berry.
Isaac found the very first and I did get a taste of it. Oh, so good.
We will continue to add on to our strawberry patch each year. But in the meantime....
We are thankful to have an organic strawberry grower, Berrycreek Farm right in town. Strawberry picking begins this weekend. Now how to save enough to make jam before they are all eaten.......
oh how delicious!! i want to make a little raised box (not sure where we will put it in our tiny urban backyard) for strawberries. we love them too, nothing like the fresh ones. we have an organic strawberry farmer not too far out and we get lots in late June to freeze... but sometimes they run out and it's months and months :) what is your jam recipe? do you have a low-sugar one? warm thoughts from ottawa, and hope you have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteThat strawberry looks yummy! We planted a strawberry bed this year that, hopefully, will give us lots of strawberries here in Oregon. Christine of "Writing From Scotland" blog told me about your blog and I'm glad she did!

So happy it's strawberry time! We've had such bad luck with critters eating ours every year....
ReplyDeleteTonya...I agree, the first sun-warmed strawberry is a treat! My patch is a year ahead of yours from when we started and it is truly incredible how quickly they grow and grow and grow. This year we expect to get a fairly good amount from the kitchen garden with plans to make an Everbearer bed in the big garden. Happy strawberry season to you...a sweet boy to share with his mama:)

I love this, Tonya- and I can perfectly imagine the scramble to find a red berry! :)
ReplyDeletetomorrow there's the Strawberry Festival in South Berwick, Maine. I went there a few years ago and we loved it. Maybe we'll make it tomorrow too, let's keep our fingers crossed for the weather!
ReplyDeleteThere's nothing quite like strawberries! We moved into our new house yesterday, and upon exploring the somewhat untamed garden space, I found a large patch of very ripe strawberries! What a great welcome. Enjoy yours, wherever they may come from!
ReplyDeleteCute! I checked our TINY wild strawberry patch and found 7 berries...one for me, and 2 for each of my three little ones...like a treasure! Great to capture these moments in a photo.
ReplyDeleteThat berry looks delicious. I purchased a pot of starter strawberries last year at our local nursery. It was $25 for 25 plants and this year they are producing like crazy. Today we picked a large bowl full, so yummy. I got the Everberry brand - they started producing about 3 weeks ago and will keep giving us berries until the middle of October.
ReplyDeleteWe have had the best strawberry season for years in the UK (unfortunately not in my garden)- I hope yours is equally productive
ReplyDeleteWe are just in strawberry season too! I made the girls special dresses just for the occasion. I can't wait to make some yummy jam. I wish we had some strawberry plants.
