Knitting and Reading

With a virus going around, I am taking the opportunity to rest lots which means knitting lots.  I finished the Matinee Jacket from my favorite knitting book (which I have probably mentioned here far too many times), Vintage Knits for Modern Babies.  I used the heavy worsted weight Andes wool from Knit Picks and size 10 circular needles.  I cast on for the smallest size that the pattern gave (3 - 6 month) and it came up about a size 3/4.  It is too big for Emmy right now.

I am reading an older book, Kinds of Love by May Sarton, that I found in our little library.  Our library is kind of special because they have held on to a pretty good size collection of older books.  It is a novel set in a fictional small New Hampshire town and is about the people that make up that town and how one finds a sense of being.

This year I have made a pledge to keep my new book buying to a minimum.  I am thinking of coming up with a book budget for our family.  Of course we always keep our eyes open at book sales, thrift shops and yard sales, but sometimes it is hard to be patient.

So, with wanting to keep our spending much less this year than last, I am going through all of the books we now own and weeding out what I don't think is worth keeping.  Through this process, I am finding lots of books that I would love to read again.  For the Family's Sake is one example.

Joining in today with Ginny.
Happy New Year everyone!

  1. Beautiful color combination on that sweater is perfect. The baby who gets that is going to be very lucky.

  2. So you sound like a book addict too! My husband definitely is - it could be worse! In our cleaning and purging this past week, he actually agreed to get rid of a bunch - I am very impressed with him.

  3. I love Vintage Knits for Modern babies, too! What a lovely job you did with the matinee jacket--so sweet.♥

For the Children's Sake is one of my all-time favorite books. I used to have a habit of reading it every August when my older children were young, before getting back into lesson work in the fall (we homeschool). I love For the Family's Sake, as well.

    Happy New Year!

  4. I have so many books on the shelf waiting to be read! I've declared that January shall be more reading, less knitting! X

  6. Oh! I love your sweater! The color combination is really lovely. My mom has that book and I finger it longingly each time but haven't ever borrowed it and made any of the patterns.
I love For the Children's Sake too and will read and reread it through the years as my kids get older!

  7. I love the sweater Tonya. I have that book too so maybe for elsie for next winter…
I have book love too you know, and am good at book budgeting, which sometimes means not so many books, and waiting, and the list is so so long, especially with vintage and out of print books making up much of the list…

  9. The Kinds of Love book sounds good!! I want to make a list of older books like that that I can collect for a reasonable price and maybe buy one a month throughout the year. We do have a family book budget, which is hard to stick to. I think my monthly purchase would be made out of my craft earnings. I particularly enjoy older books set in Britain and I want to get a bookshelf this year devoted just to my British books (and maybe even purchase more as part of the once a month thing).

  10. That sweater is so pretty!
I am also trying to limit spending on books. Fortunately, we have a good inter-library loan system here, and you do as well in Vermont. I use ours frequently.

  12. We too have WAY too many books and everything in me resists the trend of reading books on an electric device. I want to hold a book and turn the pages and mark it up!
