Knitting Bag

Joining in with Ginny again this week.

Yesterday I sewed up this knitting bag using a pair of old jeans, some fabric from an old skirt and our handmade hemlock buttons.

On my needles I am working on another hat.  The one I was knitting for myself came out well.  I just love this simple pattern as it uses up bits of yarn and also I can include some more exclusive, hand dyed yarn such as this mix of greens that I bought from The Sitting Tree.  Just putting a band in each hat would make the one skein last for many, many hats.

I have also cast on some Peace Fleece DK weight yarn on size six needles to make a vest from this free pattern.

Finally, I have started to read Jane Eyre, I book I have never read but am excited to enjoy the rich language and to get my brain active in the new year.

What are your handwork goals this year?

  1. I love the bag!
I read Jane Eyre years ago and it's one I keep meaning to reread - I think I'll get much more out of it now.

  2. How funny, I'm also knitting with some yarn I bought from The Sitting Tree (more than a year ago, at this point)! What a small and lovely world. (:

  3. I've joined in on "Creating a Family Home"'s stashbusting challenge...so I hope to dig out my ufos, and use up yarn I've already bought in an attempt to relieve guilt for having spent money and not used the yarn, save money this year, and get that wonderful feeling of closure that comes with finishing things long-neglected! Jane Eyre is one I've read over and over; I get something different from it every time (probably because of the different ages I've been when reading it!)

  6. Interesting...I was just thinking last night that I need to make a knitting bag with a strap so that I can carry it and knit at the same time. I really like how yours turned out. I particularly like the lining. One of my goals this year is to use up what I have and turn some of the old clothes into usable items too.

  8. Oh that bag is so cute! Jane Eyre. I just finished watching the movie last week. Not as good as reading the book, but lovely nonetheless.

  9. Oh, Tonya. Jane Eyre is one of my favorite, favorites of all- and our daughter's middle name is Bronte because of it!
    I love that bag!!!

  10. Enjoy getting to know Jane. If you have the time and inclination, watch the older movie with Joan Fontaine and Orson Welles. Newer versions are good, but there's just something about the old black and whites. Besides you'll get to see a very young Elizabeth Taylor as Jane's childhood friend. Thank you for encouraging the knitter in me. Made the vest for a 3rd cousin's baby this past year.

  12. I love your little knitting bag and the fact that you reused old jeans. I've been doing so much hat knitting this season. It seems everyone needs hats! I'm sure you will love Jane Eyre. :)

  14. Happy New Year! I think you will really enjoy Jane Eyre. I am so glad your hat came out well. I didn't get to post any pics of my Christmas gifts, but your handmade holiday kept me on track. I did so much more than last year and look forward to making things for all kinds of celebrations. Thank you so much for the inspiration!

  15. Great idea for the bag, it came out great! I love Jane Eyre. My favorite book of all time. I haven't read it for a few years so I should do that again soon. It's the only book I've read many, many times!

  17. I just put aside an old pair of jeans yesterday that I deemed not wearable in public. I think I am going to make myself a new knitting bag too as the bag I currently use has a velcro enclosure that just doesn't cut it with yarn! The yarn keeps getting caught on the velcro...

  18. Your bag is awesome ~ amazing what you can do with items that you no longer need...I guess the term is "upcycling"! I really like the buttons...do you sell them? My new book is going to be Anne of Green Gables - I know you have read this and everyone seems to love it!

  19. I have a piece of blue jean material in my stash given to me by my mother and since seeing your post I am interested in making a bag with it. Thank you. I read "Jane Eyre" over a winter not long ago - the same winter I cross-stitched a reproduction of Charlotte Bronte's girlhood sampler. Jan Eyre is just the thing to read during the cold dark nights to warm the soul. My daughter read it aloud to her husband one year.
My present project is a wool hook chair pad. The loops are turning out higgly-piggly rather than aligned in neat rows but I like it regardless.
