Knitting and Reading again for the Yarn Along

I am knitting Emmy a little wool vest using this free pattern and Peace Fleece lavender yarn in DK weight on size 4 needles.

I took my tattered and probably 10 year old copy of The Charlotte Mason Companion.  So much goodness in her methods and Karen writes in such a clear way and makes the reading interesting and gives so much food for thought.

We have an eclectic style of homeschooling but in the days and years to come, will be adding in even more of the Charlotte Mason style of learning as it just makes sense.
An important part of the philosophy (way of living/learning) is to be sure that your children each day have -
~ Something or someone to love
~ Something to do
~ Something to think about
Charlotte's Mason's writngs go on in much more detail what each of these three can mean and in The Charolotte Mason Companion, Karen Andreola does a wonderful job giving examples of each.

Looking forward to learning what you are knitting/crocheting and reading!

  1. I love those important things for everyday - so simple and yet so often I lose sight of them. I totally agree there is so much to think about in that book :) (I'm slowly working my way through it, very slowly ;-)

I haven't heard of Charlotte Mason before - sounds like very wise words. :)

  3. My copy of that book is rather tattered too. I reread it every once in a while to get fresh inspiration for homeschooling. Did you know that Karen has a blog called Mother Culture? Like her books, it's very sweet, gentle and old-fashioned. I enjoy it.

  5. The vest looks so nice so far. I wish that I could go back and start homeschooling over again - I would use Charlotte Mason a whole lot more! We're doing a few items now: picture study, nature study...sigh...

  8. The Charlotte Mason Companion has been one of my favorite homeschooling resources. I'm reading for 'the Children's sake' right now, it's wonderful! Hope you're having a lovely week! Barefoot Mama

  9. Beautiful color for the vest. Love the Charlotte Mason Companion! It was one of the first books I read about Miss Mason and still one of my favorites, filled with turned down pages and highlighted passages. :)

  11. I used Charlotte Mason way back in my homeschooling days. That book has been around f-o-r-e-v-e-r and is such a good one! Tried and true, I can tell you her methods really work. My grown daughter is a chemical engineer and she has amazed peers and professors with her literary skills. Engineers are usually lop-sided in that area. Keep up the good work! (both knitting and homeschooling)

  14. I've been homeschooling my kids for about 10 years and have always had an 'eclectic' sort of style. We've sort of fallen naturally into a Waldorf path so I'm following that a bit more. I have leanings toward some Charlotte Mason-y kind of stuff too and I would like to read the book you mentioned. Right now, I'm just reading Wendell Berry essays because I can't get enough of them.

As per your previous post, I can SO identify. After I had baby #6, I was EXHAUSTED and my attitude was hard to keep in check. For me, rest was the biggest help. And I hold/wear my babies constantly which can be exhausting for me. But it is so beneficial to them that I keep doing it for each one. I just try to remind myself that these exhausting days will soon pass. . .

I hope you can get as much rest as you can!!! Maybe the coming winter will allow you to cozy up for a while!

    Peace.
