Tax Time

Spending more time at the secretary than I like, figuring out our income from our businesses.  We have two etsy shops, Vermont Branch Company and Natural Earth Farm,  and Mike does a bit of property maintenance.

I prefer not to use a calculator and instead, add all of the figures by hand.  I do hope to be better, however, about doing this at the end of each month instead of waiting until the end of the year.

I hired Abby to help sort the receipts which was a wonderful help.

Not my favorite part of having our own businesses, but certainly necessary.

Warm wishes, Tonya

  1. Oh the joys of running your own business - it's time for me to dig out receipts here, too. At least the benefits outweigh...tax time!

  2. Something I need to start doing too. I love {most of the time} that we are self-employed, but paper work time is not one of them. Didn't we all just do this last year?! Have a great day.
    Warmly,

  3. ah yes, we are starting to collect everything together too. . .and this is the first year Andy was self-employed!
I also much prefer to do things by hand- sums, and planning (homeschooling, lists etc). I work better that way- I am such a visual person.
Good luck on your taxes, Tonya!
And have fun in this storm that's coming for tomorrow. . .!

  5. Well, it's nice to know there are so many of us these days all going through this together...it's not much fun doing taxes for a home business. We too are trying to do a full year's worth of calculations and organization at once and saying that next year we really need to be better organized! At least my husband has an accounting diploma, so he knows what to do. It's just a matter of finding time to do it...

  6. I'm impressed!! We shove everything in an envelope and drop it off at the financial office in town. I wouldn't know where to start! But suppose I'd learn if I had my own business. Good for you! I have heard that often from friends with businesses...'I SWEAR I'll keep track each month this coming year' then they end up scrambling...it's in our nature to procrastinate, isn't it?? Or just that we're too busy with other stuff.

  8. Oy! I just did my taxes the other day. It looks like you are doing wonderfully. It's great that your daughter can help too.

  9. Hi Tonya... I'm really good now at doing it weekly in an exercise book and stapling receipts on for every week as I so disliked having to do it once a year.... it takes me the length of a cup of tea now as i jot down my income and outgoingd for the week (I care for children in my home - a childminder we are called in the UK!) I am so looking forwards to April when I will have it all at hand for a change!!! Hope you get a good system sorted! (and have little tax to pay!) Jenni

  10. My husband is a painter and teaches art as an adjunct at the local college (in addition to his full-time job).

I just organized our receipts and am preparing to do our taxes! I could never do it all by hand--I'm impressed!
