Daily Uniform

Nearly every day I wear a skirt with a simple top and put on an apron. I choose to wear a skirt to remind myself that I am different from the world and choose to be set apart, to live a more simple life. My clothing is always modest as well.

The apron reminds me of my daily duties, that baking, cleaning, gardening, and wiping dirty hands are all part of my job and somehow the apron makes it all feel more "official". It is also fun to wear pretty vintage aprons that I find at thrift stores.

What do you wear each day?

  1. First, I have to say that I LOVE the newsletter! I'm so glad that I decided to sign up :-)

My "uniform" is a usually some sort of basic solid colored shirt and either black yoga pants or khaki pants ... and in cooler weather some sort of handknit shawl or scarf. I've been building my collection of aprons but my favorites are the ones that were my grandmothers. There's just something so powerful about putting on her apron and feeling the connection to the mothers before me, you know?

    Very pretty picture :-)

    Best wishes!

  2. How nice to see this picture of you, I like it :)
Skirts and cardigans. Dresses are my favorite but they seem to have disappeared during my 6 years straight of nursing. Guess I need to get sewing!

Now that you are home I will get my "little something" in the mail to you!

  3. Simply lovely. My favorite attire is a shirt/skirt combo or a cotton dress; but have been known to wear jeans as well. Love silk scarves for the hair! I'm going to try and make some dresses for myself soon, trying to learn construction.

  4. It is interesting that you posted this today. I am not happy with how I dress. I wear things that don't feel good or fit as I would like. I had thought this weekend that I would like to go back to dressing in skirts.

I am looking for a good pattern that will be easy and comfortable. Ideas??

    You are precious!

  5. Yoga pants and t shirts with Cardigans. That is this Mama's uniform. I love your picture. I would love to make some simple skirts for the summer.

  6. My favorite "Mom" attire is jeans and a polo shirt. I really love the vintage apron!

  7. My usual uniform is a pair of jeans and a casual blouse. I have one apron that I wear sometimes, but it seems to pull around the neck--I think I need to find one that just ties around the waist, it would be more comfortable.

  8. At home my work clothes are clothes that show all the work I do. So jeans with splashes of paint, dirty knees from working in the garden, and the many layers of patches I put on them to keep them going. There might be a faint hint of sheep smell to my clothing as I am often in the barn caring for them when my older boy is away. I have one or two old sweaters that also show the wear of my life in them. I usually have a few long sleeve and short sleeve shirts that are designated home work clothes. Most of this clothing gets covered in hay or detritus from bringing in wood at some point during the day at home.

I also have going to town clothes. These are a little nicer and as I move along in my own journey of self sufficiency are more often hand made.

Then there is the one or two really nice items I save for special occasions and church.

I don't have many clothes but feel I make the best use of them.

  11. So nice to see you! I love your daily uniform. :) I almost always wear skirts too- homemade ones. :) I gotta get myself some nicer aprons. . .or make some.

  12. You look lovely! My uniform is almost always a long bohemian looking dress, or jeans and a tank top for playing at the park with the kids.

  13. Do you wear a skirt because the Lord commands women not to wear men's clothing? What about Paul going on and on about women covering their hair or else be shaven? Do you wear a scarf to follow this commandment from the Lord as well? :)

  14. There you are! And you look beautiful! I love the ease and comfort (plus feminine feel) of skirts and tops, too, and an apron is essential for a messy mama like me!

    Love,

  16. I do, sometimes where capris or jeans when I "need" to - like bike riding or some real heavy duty work. I also like to wear skirts because they are just so comfortable. I feel that it is up to each person to decide what is right for them. That is listening to God within ourselves. I would never tell another what they should or shouldn't wear.
    Warm wishes, Tonya

  17. So true. Even though most of us would think we are wearing "free dress" we probably are all wearing our own kind of uniform. I love the way an apron really signals work and the frame of mind I'm in. I tend to wear fleecy track pants every day with a top similar to yours. It was good to see you by the way.

  18. I love that I'm not the only one who loves to perform daily duties in a skirt! I wear mostly upcycled, handmade clothing and LOVE my skirts. They make me beautiful, feminine and also remind me everyday of what I believe to be important in my life! Thanks so much for sharing~

  19. That was a very sweet read. I like your apron. :) I'm a jeans and tshirts kind of mom most of the time, unless I'm going to church or out with the hubby.

  20. I only wear skirts, modest tops, and dresses also. I feel like a lady when I wear them. It is in the bible that women should only wear womens cloths and men should only wear men cloths. It is abomination in God's eyes not to dress like your sex.

  22. I love this post and such a beautiful picture! I am very fond of all things vintage but there is something very special about vintage linens and aprons!! So beautiful, so many stories to tell!

I work in an office so my uniform in the winter tends to be black dress pants and a cardigan or cozy sweater. In the summer, it's a dress and cardigan.

    Have a peaceful day!

  23. My dear sweet mother-n-law always wore a snap button house coat over her "uniform" of dark skirt or slacks, shirt and sweater. When company came or she had to run to the market she would wipe off the house coat and be perfectly clean, no matter what messy job she had previously been absorbed in. I usually just run to the closet and rip off the yoga pants and t-shirt and pull on slacks and shirt and they are usually clean!!!

  24. I liked this post. It was interesting reading about how others dress for the day. I have to dress "casual, dress up" at work. But when I am working at home I usually wear well worn, comfy jeans and a t-shirt. I only wear an apron if I am cooking. I don't know why that is. And I'm always saying that I should wear it backwards because that's where I tend to wipe my hands!

  25. I also wear skirts and an apron everyday. It is so comfortable when I am homeschooling and keeping up with the home. You look very nice in your skirt! Thanks for giving us a picture of what you wear everyday. Blessings,Rose

  26. Sadly, my daily uniform consists of "professional" wear with heels but it is only a disguise. Once home, I'm a barefoot jeans-and-sweater gal. :)

  27. this is such a thoughtful post! I almost always wear a skirt - I love fabric so when I find a nice piece I often make it up in a simple elastic waisted skirt, sometimes to my knees, sometimes to just above my ankle. When they are looking a bit tired, or I haven't worn them in a while, I take out the elastic and put the skirt/fabric back in my patchwork cupboard for use in my sewing. It's funny to see a loved skirt show up in a quilt :-) I wear t-shirts similar to yours with my skirts - always a plain colour. White and pale pink and blue in summer, black and grey and orange in winter. Apron? Yes, compulsory. I can't stand getting the chores of the kitchen and laundry on my clothes - it feels very slovenly! And shoes? Usually sandals in summer and buckle ups in winter with stockings or long socks. My mum is very sophisticated and elegant - my wardrobe makes her laugh. And when I add a shawl in winter, she throws up her hands and declares that I will become "one of those eccentric old ladies!" Sounds good to me :-) p.s. modesty is also very important to me - especially modelling it in front of my daughter. I don't have any religious ideals I think are essential to follow, but I do think that a lot of the current fashion is over sexualised and encourages an utter lack of self respect and dignity in other facets of life. Thanks for encouraging us to stop and think with this post Tonya :-)

  28. How refreshing to see such a beautiful modest dressed woman! I've been reading the bible and praying for a long time about modesty, and yet, I'm not. My daily (current) uniforms have been whatever is clean and doesn't smell! I'm in my first tri and have been too sick to wash. I hope one day to dress modestly and beautifully like I see in your pictures!

  29. What a great post. I dress simply as well. A cotton shirt and pants usually, although in the summer a skirt. It is somewhat like a uniform of motherhood, allowing me to do all the activities and chores I need to do without worrying about what I am wearing. I have never gotten into the habit of wearing an apron. My homeschooling sister of five children wears one often. I have already begun, gently and appropriately, to discuss issues of self-image and fashion with my daughter. I think many women waste a tremendous amount of energy and time thinking about looks, and I would rather my children use that time and energy to be creative and to do good in the world.

  30. Since I work full time, I wear professional clothes during the day, but at home I am usually in gauchos or jeans and a sweater or t-shirt (depending on the season), and I have a couple pairs of jeans and shorts reserved for garden work (lots of holes and stains now). I would say 75% of my clothing, professional and otherwise, I have gotten for free at the quarterly "Naked Lady Party" clothing swaps my friends and I hold. The rest of my clothing was either bought new 3 or more years ago, or bought secondhand! I can't remember the last time I bought an item of clothing new, and yet my wardrobe is always changing.

  31. You are so cute Tonya! It seems like we are so different, but share a kindred spirit. I love your simplicity...and you could say I wear a simple attire as well. Love jeans and t shirt...love skirts in the summer with fun appliques on them, hodded sweatshirts, flip flops....pretty simple as well...no make up, or curling irons or hair dryers...just me!
Thanks, Tonya, for sharing...what a great idea!

  32. modesty is a great attribute! & I just noticed that my 'work' uniform is generally pajama bottoms & a frumpy shirt...perhaps a skirt would make me feel more productive--I know the apron does when I wear it!
